Broos Makes Petersen Admission

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has stated that Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen would have been included in his latest squad if it was not for his injury.

Broos announced the preliminary squad earlier this month, comprising five goalkeepers: Ronwen Williams, Ricardo Goss, Sipho Chaine, Renaldo Leaner, and Darren Johnson – with Petersen already sidelined with injury then.

The final squad, named on Thursday, featured Williams, Goss, and Leaner, who are the goalkeepers picked for the two friendly matches against Panama.

Petersen, before missing the last three games for Amakhosi due to injury, had been performing well, keeping 11 clean sheets in the league.

Broos noted that Petersen’s injury was the reason for his exclusion.

“I think, if Brandon was not injured he would’ve been with us… Yes,” Broos stated.

Meanwhile Sekhukhune United goalkeeper Leaner’s inclusion was a surprise, given that Chaine has the most clean sheets in the league with 14.

“Leaner, I want to see him with us. I want to see him in camp, because again not only on the pitch, also outside the pitch and we will see,” the Belgian added.
