Broos Sends Message To Fans After Bafana Victory

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos says he hopes the improved turnout of fans continues as the team deserves it.

South Africa secured a 2-1 win over Benin at Moses Mabhida Stadium with over 20,000 fans in attendance at the iconic venue in Durban – a far cry from the embarrassing turnouts in Gauteng in recent months.

Broos feels it proved pivotal in the second half as they managed to overcome the onslaught of attacks from the visitors to become the only team in Group C to register victory in their opening game of the CAF 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

“You know when you play a game like [against Benin] in the second half [we struggled] we had problems with the opponent, if you play [this game] in a stadium where there’s no people, it’s very difficult, mentally,” Broos said.

“So now the supporters were there and there were a big number of supporters, so it’s also [good] for the players on the pitch, even when they tired, they do the last sprint or they do the last tackle because the public is there, I was very happy to see so many in the crowd.

“They helped us in the difficult moments, let’s hope now for the next games at home the crowd will [always] be there because we deserve that, this team deserves that, we lost three games in two and half years – a team like that deserve to be supported. We need the crowd every home game.”

Bafana travel to Rwanda this evening for their second qualifier scheduled for Tuesday at the Huye Stadium (15h00).
