Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos says it’s nonsense that South Africa took their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nigeria to Toyota Stadium because it’s bad as he is also not happy with the turf.
Bafana meet the Super Eagles at the Free State venue on Tuesday evening with a winning securing their place at the global showpiece to be hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Broos said that even before their last qualifier against Lesotho he wasn’t happy with the state of the pitch. The coach was asked in the pre-match press conference ahead of the Super Eagles encounter if it was deliberate and he said he finds it nonsensical that they’d also put themselves at a disadvantage.
“I said this already before I’m not happy with the pitch either and there were people who were blaming me that I didn’t want to play here,” said Broos.
“This is stupid. But the pitch is not what we want to have and it’s true all the qualifiers we played on very good pitches. Okay this one is not so good there is no reason why we are playing here against Nigeria because the pitch is not good. This is nonsense. We’d have also liked to have a very good pitch before.
“It’s not like that and we have to deal with the pitch of tomorrow [Tuesday] and we also played on this pitch on Friday also and that was not our choice, that was Lesotho who was the home team.
“But it’s not that bad I have to say, and we also saw the game on Friday that we can’t blame that this s a very, very bad pitch.”
