Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has explained why he believes Orlando Pirates star Relebohile Mofokeng needs a major transfer move now.

The South African national team head coach was speaking at the post-squad announcement press conference following the unveiling of his 26-man FIFA World Cup roster.

Asked about Mofokeng—whom the Belgian tactician believes will be one of South Africa’s key players at the tournament—Broos made a passionate plea to the nation.

He urged fans and media not to place too much pressure on the youngster’s shoulders to deliver or expect him to carry the team, noting that he is still young and relatively inexperienced at this level.

He added that this is precisely why he wants the attacker to move to a bigger league, where he can continue to develop and become a crucial asset for the country in the future.

“I’m convinced that he’s not yet on his highest level, he needs some things more,” said Broos.

“And I hope for him that he will have a transfer now and go to the bigger competition and become even a better player than he is now.

“I don’t think we have to put too much pressure on his shoulders; he’s still a young man. We have to protect him even when he should have performances that we expect from him.

“I don’t think he’s ready for that, but with the qualities, with how good he is, he can help us a lot in the World Cup. But again, don’t put too much pressure on his shoulders.

“He’s not ready for that, not yet. He can become a very important player for Bafana Bafana but it’s still too soon to put that pressure or weight on him.

“I also have to protect him that he’s not burnt when he comes back from the World Cup. And that everyone starts to doubt him.

“I know he needs more power and experience on that level but with the qualities he has, he will achieve [what’s expected of him].”
