Orlando Pirates number one goalkeeper Sipho Chaine says he is focussed on what he can control and not worried about challenging Ronwen Williams to be South Africa’s number one.
Chaine enjoyed an impressive 2024/25 season with the Buccaneers that culminated in him being voted the Betway Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season. Though he is a regular in Hugo Broos’ camps, Chaine has played second fiddle to his Mamelodi Sundowns counterpart in the Bafana Bafana set-up.

His side hasn’t enjoyed the best of starts in the league this season where they have lost two of their three matches played so far but are through to the final of the MTN8 for the fourth time in succession, with Chaine playing a big role in the deciding semi-final against Sundowns.
Chaine spoke to iDiski Times senior journalist Lorenz Köhler and other media colleagues in an interview carried in edition 218 of the newspaper.
He was asked if he’s looking to challenge Williams during the upcoming World Cup qualifiers and the Africa Cup of Nations and the 28-year-old said his focus is on what he can control playing regularly and improving at his club.
“I think the opportunity for me is to play every domestic game,” responded Chaine.
“It’s all I can control, to be better in every game that I play for Orlando Pirates. And without the team, there’s no possibility of anything else outside that.
“So, my full focus is to get better in each and every game that I play, to be a better goalkeeper like I said earlier, and that is my sole aim this season, forgetting what we did last season and focusing on what else it is that I can do this season.”
