Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has insisted that Kaizer Chiefs need to find back to their best when asked whether players like Thabo Cele will be in contention for national team call-ups.
The Belgian mentor announced his final 23-man squad on Thursday, but no Amakhosi player made the selection after Rushwin Dortley was the only one in the preliminary squad but got cut due to injury.
After Thabo Cele had some impressive matches since his return to South African football, Broos was asked whether he would be looking at the Amakhosi midfielder for the national team, but he insisted Chiefs first need to get back to a better and more consistent level.
“You can’t tell already that Chiefs is back,” he said during his squad announcement on SABC1.
“I thought so maybe in the beginning of the season but then I don’t know what happened and still they are struggling.
“When I see them play yesterday against Cape Town – you can’t say that everything is alright in that team.
“When the team will be better, or when players will be better, surely, surely I will call up the players from Chiefs. But for the moment I don’t think I have to call them.
“They are really struggling again in the league and let’s hope, not only for Chiefs, but for all South African football, that next season we have again that big team, that big club that struggles and fights for the championship.”
