Doc Weighs In On Broos’ Tactical Decisions

Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo has shared his thoughts on Hugo Broos’ decision to deploy three centre-backs against Cameroon.

South Africa was eliminated from the continental tournament following a narrow 2–1 loss to the Indomitable Lions on Sunday.

Many took issue with Broos’ tactics, suggesting that the three centre-back system, supported by wing-backs and a defensive midfielder, became too defensive at points.

Khumalo believes Broos aimed to neutralise the opponents’ attacking threat, but feels the coach should have explored other options instead of sticking with three defenders for the entire match.

“I guess he tried to neutralise the Cameroon striking force,” said Khumalo as per SuperSportBet.

“But you can’t play three defenders for the entire 90 minutes, yet Cameroon were using only one with [Bryan] Mbeumo, coming as a dummy striker.

“It’s only when they were pressing, so he should have come up with a second option.”
