Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo has defended Mbekezeli Mbokazi over his late sending off against Zimbabwe.
Mbokazi was sent off late in the game after picking up two yellows in the 95th and 97th minute, meaning he will miss the final qualifier against Rwanda.
After the match, Khumalo argued that the young Orlando Pirates captain “took one for the team” but also admitted that let himself being provoked.
“He took one for the team,” he stated on SABC.
“He’s been ruffled and he wants to push – that I don’t condone, because it’s retaliation.
“This boy provoked the situation. Can you see what the captain did, he said play on. But he did that because he was so angry in such a way because he wanted the game to go on.
At this points, his co-analyst Hlompho Kekana interfered, stating: “As the captain of Orlando Pirates he needs to understand the emotions of the game.”
Khumalo then continued: “Yes, I know. Yes, he retaliated and it’s a bookable offence. He has to take it and he took is for the team also.
“If you are in there, it’s so difficult… Your emotions, everything that is happening on the field. You know we have to win the game and somebody is provoking you, he’s destabilising you and this is what happens.”
