Bafana Bafana have qualified for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations with one game to spare, and here is how the mathematics work.
Hugo Broos’ men beat Liberia 2-1 in Monrovia on Tuesday thanks to goals by Zakhele Lepasa and Mihlali Mayambela.
The victory sees Bafana climb to four points in Group K, two behind leaders Morocco and three ahead of Liberia.
Both, South Africa and Liberia still face Morocco in the reverse fixtures, but even if South Africa would lose their game and the Lone Stars would beat Morocco to draw level on four points, Bafana will be through.
The reason is that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) uses head to head results as tie breakers, with Bafana picking up four points in the direct clashes against Liberia.
The top two teams from each group qualify, with Group K only having three teams because Zimbabwe are still suspended from international football.
The upcoming AFCON will take place in January and February 2024.
