Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ricardo Goss has pointed out the positive from the team’s challenging start at the ongoing AFCON in Morocco.
South Africa recorded two wins and one loss from their three group-stage matches. However, both victories, against Angola and Zimbabwe, were hard-earned, with the team conceding a total of four goals across all games.
Goss admits Bafana haven’t been at their best compared to the last AFCON, but he’s encouraged by their goalscoring and tournament mindset, focusing on winning rather than playing fancy.
“I think we’re scoring, and I think we’re playing tournament football,” said Goss.
“Sometimes, we do keep the ball and play tiki-tiki but we’re more about goals. I think that’s what tournament football is about.”
Goss says conceding goals has been one of the main concerns that they have spoken about in camp, and the team is working to address it in the upcoming matches.
“One of the main things we have spoken about in camp is that we have conceded in every game, unlike in the last AFCON, we were very stingy with goals,” he added.
“We were also disappointed with how the results came about in the Egypt game. That’s why we were a bit [unhappy].
“But we know what we can do and what we’re good at. I think going forward, we will be back and be stingy with goals again.”
Bafana take on Cameroon in the Round of 16 on Sunday, 4 January, at Al Barid Stadium in Rabat, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00.
