Jali Weighs In On Mofokeng Vs Zwane Debate

Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Andile Jali says he doesn’t like it when people make comparisons between players, weighing in on who should be South Africa’s number 10 between Themba Zwane and Relebohile Mofokeng.

There has been an ongoing debate as to who should start for Bafana Bafana in the number 10 role at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Hugo Broos stated he sees Mofokeng in that role rather than a winger.

During the recent international break, Mofokeng featured as 10 for Bafana, as did Zwane who returned to the national team for the first time since October 2024, with the performances of the two sparking a debate as to who should feature in the role at the World Cup.

But Jali believes the comparison of the two is unfair, as Mofokeng still needs to prove himself by staying longer in the game.

“Why make comparison with a young man,” probed Jali on the Arena Sports Show.

“He hasn’t even played for long and you are talking about him. Let him play at least 10 successive years then we can talk, not after one or two years.

“He’s young, so let him play and enjoy himself. Now the boy is not growing.

“At Pirates this season after the MTN8 he had a phase where he dropped and people were complaining. People claimed he was affected by [Mohau] Nkota’s move and all that.

“But it’s not that part. He needs to fix himself first before people talk.”
