Bafana Bafana defender Grant Kekana has revealed that his national squad teammates brimmed with joy upon hearing that Hugo Broos was staying on as head coach.
There were reports that Broos was going to leave Bafana for either Tunisia or Algeria during Bafana’s 2023 AFCON campaign where South Africa finished third, a first podium finish for the 1996 champions in 24 years.
Broos has since helped Bafana to a 59th world and 10th-place ranking in Africa while seeing them into in second place in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers with seven points in four matches.
Kekana, who was voted DStv Premiership Defender of the Season, told iDiski Times writer Lethabo Kganyago in the latest edition, 160, that as players they went crazy when the coach told them that he was staying because they wanted a longer journey with the Belgian mentor.

“Yeah, definitely I think when he said that to us in the change-room everyone went crazy,” Kekana told iDiski Times.
“Because we all understood that he got us this far and there was another hurdle to go through trying to qualify for the World Cup. Us as players, we want to enjoy the ride with him there because he has turned the tide and perception of South Africans when it comes to football again.
“It’s been a while since people believed in Bafana Bafana and we want to walk that journey with him.”
