Killer Reveals Benni Regret

Former Bafana Bafana striker Katlego ‘Killer’ Mphela has admitted his regret at not breaking Benni McCarthy’s record as Bafana’s all-time goal scorer.

McCarthy has scored 31 goals between 1997 and 2012, while Mphela netted 23 goals in his 53 appearances for South Africa.

There had been expectations that the former SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs forward would break the record – even from the player himself.

He revealed to iDiski Times in the latest edition of the newspaper that looking back, there were a lot of things in his way to achieve this and he eventually gave up after the 2013 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) on home soil.

“Yeah regret a bit because of the ratio of the goals I was scoring then,” Mphela told iDiski Times.

“The injuries didn’t help and the form, you lose form and how many games do you play in a calendar [year] for a national team? Four, three and for you to play those games you need to perform at club level. And major tournaments.

“So those things they contribute. And I think after the AFCON, the last AFCON we hosted, that’s when I realised that I’m not going to do it because the way I was then and then I was struggling with fitness and stuff.

“So it was a little bit difficult but yes I regret [not breaking it].”
