Mamelodi Sundowns senior coach Steve Komphela has made a claim that Bafana Bafana right-back Khuliso Mudau is just on the same level as Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi.
Mudau, 31, has been hailed as one of the best in his position in South Africa across generations. His displays in the CAF Champions League especially last season where he helped the Brazilians clinch their second continental title, have also been used as proof of his qualities.
The Limpopo-born defender was also instrumental in Bafana’s historic 2026 FIFA World Cup on-going in the USA, Mexico and Canada.
Though knocked out of the tournament, Bafana reached the second round of the global showpiece for the first time where they exited at the round of 32 at the hands of Canada.
Komphela spoke to iDiski Times senior writer Matshelane Mamabolo in edition 262 of the newspaper about ‘Sailor’ easily ranking in the top five right-backs in the world.
“I’ve told him he is at the level of Achraf Hakimi,” Komphela told iDiski Times.
“He is a player of unbelievable defensive capacities. Sailor is amazing in one-on-ones; he’s a monster in those situations and no doubt one of the best on the continent.
“For me, he easily ranks in the top five [right-backs] in the world. He has great pride in duels. I am yet to see him struggle with a winger.
“He’s got such physical capacity you will never outpace him, and such is his confidence in his pace that he sometimes deliberately gives a winger a yard or two so he can open a stride to recover.”
