Bafana Bafana winger Relebohile Mofokeng said he shoulders some responsibility in the side’s elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco.
Bafana lost 2-1 to Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions at the Agdal Medina Stadium on Sunday in Mofokeng’s first start at the tournament to exit the competition at the last 16 round, a poor finish compared to the third place in the last edition in Ivory Coast.
Mofokeng was among the players who missed opportunities early in the first half to put Bafana in the lead against Cameroon and the Orlando Pirates attacker bemoaned the missed chances by the team while admitting his missed opportunity could have changed things for South Africa in the encounter.
“I think that chance was the one that could have opened the game for us,” said Mofokeng on SABC TV.
“I also take responsibility that I should have scored that chance, but we created a lot of chances, and we should have used our chances. It’s not the first time that we trailed 1-0 and we encouraged each other that we could get a goal.
“We didn’t lose hope because we believed we could progress from the last 16 round. Our spirits were high because the game wasn’t over yet, it had just started.
“We should have continued to work hard and continued to play how we did because I think we had the game in our hands we just needed to use our opportunities.”
