Polokwane City head coach Phuti Mohafe has commented on City’s Bafana Bafana players’ real chance of making the final AFCON squad and World Cup saying they face tough competition.
Thabang Matuludi and Ndamulelo Maphangule have been regular call-ups in Hugo Broos’ side and have also been included in the preliminary squad for the upcoming international friendly against Zambia this month. With just two months to the AFCON in Morocco, Mohafe say the if the two make the final cut for the game against Chipolopolo they will have to punch above their weight against competition from their peers at top sides like Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.
“You will never know because every player now is pushing to be in the national team to go to AFCON [and] to the World Cup,” said Mohafe after Rise and Shine’s 1-1 draw with Richards Bay.
“So, competition is rife with Matuludi you still have [Zuko] Mdunyelwa at Sundowns, you still have [Thabiso] Monyane at [Kaizer] Chiefs. So, they are vying for the same spot, as well as [Khuliso] Mudau, [Thapelo] Morena also at Sundowns as a versatile player.
“So, with Maphangule he is fighting for that spot, with the likes of [Thalente] Mbatha, the likes of [Patrick] Maswanganyi. So, competition is rife. So, they have to go and test themselves in the national level.”
