Mokoena Hails Bucs Youngster Among Three Who Impressed

Former Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena believes Mbekezeli Mbokazi is among three players who raised their hand for future selections by Hugo Broos.

Mokoena, who is still the most-capped player in Bafana history, has praised the performance of Mbokazi, who made his senior national team debut in the 2-0 win over Mozambique.

After the match, Bafana coach Hugo Broos admitted that some players “definitely raised their hands” for re-selection even when the Mamelodi Sundowns players will return.

Mokoena agreed and named Mbokazi, along with Sinoxolo Kwayiba and Yanela Mbuthuma as the three players he felt impressed most.

“I think this coach is one coach who will leave a serious foundation for us,” he said on SABC3.

“It will be dependent on the next successor on what we’ll be doing [after him]. But in these 23 players I think Mbokazi – he is still 19 – today he impressed me a lot.

“I mean these are international standards, senior international standards… I coached him at the U20s, he could play left-back but today the interceptions that he had gave me the belief that he deserves a chance to be part of the squad.

“Maybe Sinoxolo Kwayiba stands a good chance, we only have [Evidence] Makgopa, we only have probably two strikers – including him for me that will do.

“We don’t say much about Mbuthuma… Mbuthuma for me [reminds me of] Mark Williams, there is no defenders don’t want to play against such a players.

“Those three players I think they stand a good chance to be called up again.”

Bafana return to action in September when they will continue their qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with games against Lesotho and Nigeria.
