Nigeria legend Jay-Jay Okocha believes Nigeria will need to win all their remaining FIFA World Cup qualifiers, including their trip to South Africa, to have a chance at qualifying for the tournament.
The Super Eagles are experiencing a stuttering World Cup campaign and only sit in fourth place with just seven points from six games. A last-minute equaliser by Zimbabwe in the last game was the latest blow suffered by Eric Chelle and his team.
With only four games left and a six-point gap to Hugo Broos’ Bafana, qualifying for the tournament seems a tough ask, but 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner Okocha says he has not given up hope just yet.
“If we want to give ourselves any chance of qualifying we have to be thinking of winning all our remaining matches,” he said when asked by iDiski Times journalist David Kappel about the clash between Bafana and the Super Eagles.
“Of course Bafana Bafana are top in the group, it will be a difficult game to play but of course we still believe that we can go there and win.
“If we want to qualify those are the games that we need to win. I believe that we can win there, but it’s definitely not going to be easy.”
Okocha, who represented Nigeria 75 times, including at three World Cups, now works as ambassador for the Bundesliga, where he played for Eintracht Frankfurt to make his name in the early stages of his career.
