Former Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has side-stepped the issue concerning interest in the Bafana Bafana job.
The South African national senior team will be without a coach after the 2026 FIFA World Cup as incumbent Hugo Broos has already announced he will leave the team and retire after the event. Riveiro has enjoyed a good spell with Pirates where he helped them win five domestic Cups and reach the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League in two and half years.
The Spaniard is currently in South Africa doing work for the Carling Cup and he was asked if he’d interested in the Bafana job. He urged South Africans to enjoy the moment the team is in and worry about the coaching matters when the time is right.
“But South Africa has national team coach right now, we’re living today,” said Riveiro.
“I will answer this straight because we have to enjoy the moment right now. South Africa is doing, so well in terms of football.
“We are just about to go to AFCON, a World Cup in the horizon as well. Playing good football, people are going again to the stadiums to watch the Bafana games, following in a massive way in TV as well. So let’s enjoy the moment.
“Let’s give all the support to Hugo and his people and these players, because they are on the verge is a word, to do something great for South African football.
“And let’s see what happened after that. There’s going to be a lot of discussions around that subject because it’s normal and yeah, let’s see.”
