Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams has explained why he feels they are getting closer to beating the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
South Africa’s last taste of victory against Nigeria was in 2017, a memorable 2-0 away win during an AFCON qualifying match.

Since then, the Super Eagles have held the advantage, with two wins and two draws. Notably, both of Nigeria’s wins came in major tournament settings—the 2019 and 2024 AFCON tournaments.
However, despite their positive results, Nigeria haven’t had it easy with Bafana showing immense resilience, leaving it all on the field whenever the two sides meet.
Williams says Bafana’s previous displays against Nigeria have been a clear sign of their growth as a team. He believes it’s only a matter of time before they get the better of Super Eagles, suggesting that their next encounter might just be the moment they’ve been waiting for.
“That’s the history they’ve got over us, we haven’t beaten them in a very long time,” said Williams.
“And yes, we’ve had positive results, I mean, going away to Nigeria last year, it’s so difficult. And to come out there with a positive result and playing the way we played, shows that we are growing as a team. And we’re getting closer and closer to beating them.
“We saw it at AFCON; we saw it when we played them away in Nigeria. So, hopefully tomorrow [Tuesday], we can go a step further and, change the narrative because I mean, if you look that to head-to-head, obviously they’ve got the bragging rights.
“But hopefully tomorrow, we can show that there’s a new leaf for Bafana Bafana and that our Amapiano guys can be happy.”
