Williams Praises Appollis Resilience

Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has heaped huge praise on attacker Oswin Appollis after a great come back in football.

Appollis has a story that should motivate anyone in life that has given up. The Orlando Pirates midfielder started his career at the now defunct Ajax Cape Town at a very young age and showed signs of a top footballer.

Things turned bad when he moved to SuperSport United and struggled to get game time and things became worse as he was without a team before he was revived by Kwanele Kopo at Pretoria Callies.

Two years later, the 24-year-old got a Bafana Bafana call up while he was playing for Polokwane City and became a key figure for Bafana in both AFCONs in Ivory Coast and Morocco.

Williams couldn’t praise Appollis enough stating that as professional footballers it’s not easy for them to remain professional and show up everyday.

“Yeah, amazing shows the type of person he is and his character. Think, three years ago, he was without a team and going through it,” Williams told the media.

“I had a lot of chats with Oswin because we shared so much about our backgrounds and the communities where we come from, and obviously, I was his captain at SuperSport United as well. And to see where he is now is amazing.

“You can just give him praise; you can’t praise him enough for what he’s done over the last few years because it’s not easy in today’s world. It’s very difficult to be a professional and a professional who shows up every week and shows his level.

“He’s been consistent, I think, for the last two or three years, for the national team as well. So, it speaks volumes about the type of person he is and the player he is, and I’m just happy.

“You know, to see that he isn’t one of the negative stories in South Africa that we have so many of; he’s one of the positive ones, and one that we need to use as a perfect example.”
