Bafana Bafana legend Mark Williams has thrown his weight behind coach Hugo Broos ahead of the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup saying he trusts the squad named by the coach.

Broos announced his final 26 man squad last week at the Presidential farewell dinner which also received some backlash for the manner in which things were done especially with regards to those who didn’t make the final cut from the 32 man provisional list.

As expected not everybody was satisfied as they felt some players did not deserve to be in the travelling party to Mexico while the coach also came under fire for leaving some in form players out of the team.

Williams said the coach knows what he is doing and the back-to-back qualifications for the last two editions of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament and the World Cup are proof of that and deserves the backing of the fans.

“You know, I think a lot of times this has been asked from the coach I think that he knows the place” said Williams.

“He’s been long with South Africa and he selected the strongest team. Like I said, I’m going to say it again, it’s not a [Mamelodi] Sundowns team, it’s not a [Orlando] Pirates team, it’s not a [Kaizer] Chiefs team, it’s a national team.”

“So people must remember to support the national team, and don’t go and say why this player or that player is not out. The coach, we leave it in his hands.”

“He did qualify for the AFCON Cup, he did qualify for the World Cup, and that’s good enough. Fans must just be behind the team and they will give us 100%.”
