Williams – Time To Rewrite History In Mbombela

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams hopes to rewrite history at Mbombela Stadium, as they set to face Rwanda in a must win match.

Mbombela Stadium is a venue that most South African football supporters associate with Bafana celebrating in 2012, thinking that they have qualified for the AFCON only to later they find out that they didn’t.

Tuesday evening Bafana will host Rwanda in a crucial clash where anything less than a win will see them failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup – and even a win might not be enough.

South Africa also need Nigeria to beat Benin for them to qualify, while a draw between Benin and Nigeria would mean that Bafana must at least beat Rwanda by two goals.

Speaking with media on Monday, Williams mentioned that they were asked where they want to play this important clash and as players they opted for Gqeberha or Cape Town but it was confirmed later that the game will be played in Mbombela.

“Like I mentioned, I believe in fairy tales, because when they asked us last month, where do we want to play, most of the players said it’s either Port Elizabeth or Cape Town, cause of the support that we got,” he stated.

“And then, for some weird reason, we just heard that we coming to Mbombela Stadium, and maybe now it’s time to right our wrongs from so many years ago, because people still mention that, and that is something that sits with Bafana Bafana for will probably be there forever.

“So hopefully tomorrow we can rewrite the script, and like I said I believe in fairy tales. Tomorrow we go again.

“Calculators will be out at the Mbombela, so hopefully things can go in our favour. Now, hopefully the football Gods will be on our side, and tomorrow we all will be dancing, maybe we’ll rock that same dance that they done that you.”
