Banyana Coach Warns Against Complacency

Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis is happy to have additions to the squad ahead of their crunch second leg second round Olympic qualifying tie against the DRC on Monday.

Jermaine Seoposenwe and Samkelisiwe Selana, who missed the away leg, will be available. However, former captain Janine Van Wyk will not be, after controversially leaving the camp.

The tie is currently hanging in the balance after a 1-1 result last week, but Ellis remains confident, though warns of any complacency against a very competitive DRC side.

“I think it’s a game that we must win,” Ellis told SAFA media.

“It’s a game that we have to really start well and take the game away from the opponent. They’ve shown that they’re a resilient team. They’ve shown that they can also take the game by the scruff of the neck.

“But we’re playing at home and we’ve got to take charge at home. We’ve got to make sure that we control every moment. We’ve got to make sure that when we’re in front, that we’re clinical. We’ve got to make sure that we don’t concede. We’ve gotta make sure that we control the tempo, that we control everything to make sure that we get the result.

“As I said, it’s going to be a difficult game, they have shown the quality.

“We’ve got additions since the last one, the first leg round match, we’ve got additions in Jemaine coming in, Selana coming in, and of course Faith [Nokuthula] and Linda [Matlholo] being available, and that adds a lot to our team. Hopefully, we can take our chances and make sure that we don’t concede.

“But we urge the fans to come out and support the team. But we just have to take charge from minute one until the end of the game.”
