Ellis – Resilience Won Us The Game

Banyana Banyana head coach Dr Desiree Ellis has applauded the team’s fighting spirit in their 2-1 victory over Malawi in Pretoria on Tuesday.

The African champions came from a goal down at the Lucas Moripe Stadium to complete a double over the Scorchers in the second friendly, having beaten them 3-0 four days earlier in Soweto.

The games were being used as part of preparation for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in July.

Ellis admitted there were areas her side weren’t good at but pleased to see some depth in the squad and emphasised that resilience won them the game.

“The resilience that this team shows,” said Ellis.

“The fighting spirit that the team shows, the never-say-die attitude that they have shown, gave us the victory.

“It wasn’t a good day the weather also plays a part but it plays a part for both teams. And the few chances that we had if it’s on target it’s a goal.

“But at the end of the day sometimes you don’t play well but you get the result and this is one of those days.”

Meanwhile Nompumelelo Nyandeni bowed out international stage playing 55 minutes in her 150th appearance for Banyana. Mbuzi said she was pleased that her teammates made it a memorable farewell.

“I was excited to represent my country for the last time. I’m also happy that my teammates fought for me by winning the game and having a proper send-off.”
