Not The Result We Wanted – Ellis

Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis has reacted to her side’s 1-1 draw with Lesotho in their last Group A match at the COSAFA Women’s Championship in Polokwane.

The draw ensured that the record regional champions top the group with seven points and set-up a semi-final meeting with Zimbabwe on Friday at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The tournament is also being used as preparation for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) which is a 2027 World Cup qualifiers.

Ellis admitted they didn’t play how they wanted and the result wasn’t what they wanted as well.

“You could see the disappointment, but coach Ridhaa [Allie] was right when he said it’s not a nice feeling and we don’t want to feel this way again,” said Ellis after the game.

“We still got a semi-final to look forward to, make sure that we make that right and have a better feeling you know after that it’s important because we want to make sure we get those games, we get those challenges. It’s very important especially for the players that are at the COSAFA to be able to test them.

“Not getting the result you wanted is disappointing, but I think what’s even more disappointing is also that we didn’t play as well as we should. But you also got to give credit to Lesotho they were very aggressive they ran throughout the 90 minutes they put their bodies on the line.

“We just couldn’t up our game at certain times and sometimes we rushed it especially when we were in ascendency we got a couple, one or two half chances but didn’t get the win.”
