AmaZulu President Explains Benni Decision

AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu has explained his decision to let go of head coach Benni McCarthy.

McCarthy was released from his duties earlier on Friday, 15 months after taking charge of the Durban-based outfit.

Zungu confirmed the club felt their target of finishing inside the top four is currently in danger and that is why they had to act.

“We’re not happy with the performance of the team, lately,” Zungu told Thabiso Mosia on SAFM.

“We’re concerned that at this rate we’re not going to secure a top four finish, which is our target [for the season].

“I’ve maintained that AmaZulu is a top quarter team and if that ambition is threatened, we fear that.”

The Usuthu boss also stated that McCarthy’s position is not the only one to be reviewed as there could be serious changes in the squad, should they fail to finish inside the top four.

“I think the same attitude goes towards the players as well,” he added.

“We’ve told them that if come the end of the season we cannot secure a top four finish, we’ve got to do a wholesome look at the squad.

“The same with the administration as well.”

McCarthy left AmaZulu after 59 games in charge, leading them to 23 wins, 22 draws and 14 defeats in all competitions.
