Lamontville Golden Arrows, in an effort to bolster their attack, have welcomed former Moroka Swallows striker Kagiso Malinga at their training in Durban to prepare for the season’s second half.
Malinga was released by cash-strapped Swallows recently, who have had issues with salaries in recent months, which led to them forfeiting two games in December.
Swallows chairman David Mogashoa hinted to this publication that, because of the financial woes at his club, he has no choice but to release 10 or more players in the January/February transfer window.
Malinga is one of those who have been shown the door by Swallows, with the Dube Birds having seen six points forfeited by the league, handed to Mamelodi Sundowns and Arrows respectively, for failing to honour those two games last month.
The 28-year-old has been with Swallows for almost four and half seasons, having joined the Soweto giants ahead of the 2019/20 season.
He was with Brandon Truter’s Dube Birds side when they gained the PSL promotion in the same season, scoring 12 goals in 24 matches.
This led to him being part of the Bafana B side that won the COSAFA Cup in the Eastern Cape in 2021 without conceding a goal. In six appearances, Malinga scored a solitary goal against Botswana in the opening match of Group A, where Morena Ramoreboli was the stand-in coach.
Malinga, if he is signed by Abafana Bes’Thende, will become their second signing after they re-signed Sibusiso Sibeko in December.
Coach Mabhuti Khenyeza and his side, having started well and being second in the DStv Premiership table in September, need fresh blood up top as they have been on a downward spiral as they have lost their last seven matches in all competitions before the league was stopped.
They have slipped down to 10th in the table with 20 points after 15 matches.
After the Africa Cup of Nations finals that is underway in Ivory Coast, Arrows will resume the season when they host the mighty Mamelodi Sundowns at Mpumalanga Stadium on 14 February.
