Barker Hails Former Chiefs Talent

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker had high praises for former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Darrel Matsheke after producing a five-star performance against rivals Cape Town Spurs.

Stellies signed Matsheke in October after he was released by Chiefs following his loan spell at Moroka Swallows.

The Amakhosi youth product spent most of his time out of the club after he had a promising start in the first team back in the 2020/21 season.

When the Cape Winelands side lost Sibongiseni Mthethwa to Chiefs in August, they were looking for a replacement and Barker mentioned that it only took less than 10 minutes to see that Matsheke is what they needed.

“His best position is the defensive midfielder as a six, we lost Mthethwa to Chiefs so we were a little bit thin in that area. We had Nduli, if Nduli had to get injured or not be available for an extended period of time that would put us under pressure.” Barker told iDiski Times.

“So we signed Darrel. He trained with us once when we were in Joburg, we had a match up there and he was looking for a team.

“It didn’t take longer than eight, seven minutes and I said no we must sign him. His got great attitude, his got bite, his got physicality, he likes to defend, he knows his role in the team and credit to him.

“He had some big performances for us and again he just adds to the depth of the squad and competition for places. But Yha, we very pleased to have a player like him.

“He played at Chiefs, he played in Champions League, he played matches for them, so I think he is a real good player.”

Matsheke scored in the 3-0 win over Spurs which moved Stellies into fourth place in the league.
