Barker On Stellies Red Card Issues

Stellenbosch head Steve Barker addressed the issue of red cards after they were reduced to 10 men for the sixth time this season.

Stellies has received more red cards than any other DStv Premiership team. The Cape Winelands side received six red cards and lost four of those matches.

The Carling Knockout Cup champions were reduced to 10 men after Ivorian Ismael Toure was sent off against Chili Boys – which was his second of the season.

Barker stated that they identified this during the AFCON break when they had a mini-camp with players and addressed but sometimes the heat of the moment changes everything.

“It’s something we had a sort of alignment during AFCON, we identified one of the key areas that can never be done, us in achieving what we want to achieve is penalties, giving away and red cards,” Barker told iDiskiTimes.

“Look at a lot of our results this season, losing to SuperSport United we had a red card, losing to Moroka Swallows with a red card, losing to Orlando Pirates with a red card.

“Red cards do make it difficult for you, it is something we spoke about, something we hoped that we wouldn’t repeat, sometimes players and the heat of the moment make the wrong choices and the wrong decisions and we suffer from the consequences.

“It puts us on the bit of the setback Jayden Adams also picked up his fourth yellow card and also a bit of injury by the looks of things.

“We just gonna have to go back and reassess what we need to do for Tuesday.”

Stellies now have back to back Cape Town Derbies when they face Cape Town City and Cape Town Spurs in the space of five days next week.
