Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker gave a nod for Lucas Ribeiro to win the Player of the Season and one of the Stellies defenders to win Defender of the Season.
With the season coming to an end, the time to vote and give opinion on who should walk away with accolades in the Premier Soccer League, Sundowns forward Lucas Ribeiro seems to have won the hearts for the South Africans with yet another coach naming him the best player in the league.
The Brazilian has had a fantastic season with Sundowns scoring 16 goals and providing nine assists in 26 matches he played in the Betway Premiership and Barker made it clear that it shouldn’t be a question on who should walk away with the Player of the season accolade because Ribeiro is head and shoulders above the rest.
“For me it’s not even a question, Lucas Ribeiro for me he has been the most influential for Sundowns,” Barker told the media.
“I know Iqie [Iqraam Rayners] our ex-player has had a great season as well, but I just think he [Ribeiro] is a talisman for Sundowns and whenever he plays, whenever he’s on the ball things seems to happen so for me, he would get my vote.”
The longest serving coach in the PSL stated that the Defender of the Season should come from his side after they had a good season. Fawaaz Basadien had a stand-out season scoring three goals and providing five assists in 26 games. Ismael Toure made 22 appearances and scored one goal, while Thabo Moloisane made 25 appearances, scored two goals and provided two assists.
“It has to be from Stellenbosch, I just can’t decide which one,” Barker added.
“People like Fawaaz [Basadien], Ismael Toure, Thabo Moloisane they had a really good season so I would say that one of them win it.”
