Benni McCarthy says he would be keen to coach Kaizer Chiefs but also admitted there has not been any contact from the Soweto giants so far.

McCarthy, 48, is currently the head coach of the Kenyan national team but he has been linked with a move to struggling Chiefs, who have lost five out of their last six games across all competitions

The run has seen them drop out of the Nedbank Cup and CAF Confederations Cup, while they have fallen to sixth place in the Betway Premiership. They’ve lost three league games on the trot and another defeat against Durban City on Sunday would be a new negative record.

However, despite the poor run in form, Chiefs’ Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr insisted they are still keeping co-coaching duo Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef, insisting they know about the seriousness of the situation.

Meanwhile a section of the club’s fans protested near Naturena over the past weekend, handing a memorandum to the club in which they called for the duo to be replaced.

Amid the insecure future of the current technical team, McCarthy’s name has continuously come up, and the former Orlando Pirates player revealed he would be keen to coach the club he supported all his life.

“It’s my childhood team that I support, so of course, as a player, I would have jumped if it were that situation,” he told iDiski Times‘ Matshelane Mamabolo.

“If the Chairman [Irvin Khoza] asked me to join Pirates, and Chiefs came to me. I would go to Chiefs because it’s my team I supported, you understand?

“But, I’m in a situation where if they don’t want you, I don’t force anything upon anyone. So, I won’t avail myself for an interview or anything.

“But if they think that I’m the right fit, or something like that, of course, we’re there to have those discussions.

“But, thus far, nothing has come through.”

You can read McCarthy’s full interview with Bra Jakes, where he also discusses the poor attitude of today’s young players, and shares his thoughts on the Betway Premiership title rave, in this week’s iDiski Times e-paper, edition 246.
