SuperSport United captain Onismor Bhasera says they want to keep themselves in the title “mix” until the end of the season.
The Tshwane giants are lying third in the DStv Premiership table with 21 points after 12 matches, seven points behind Mamelodi Sundowns, who are topping the table with 28 points.
SuperSport were the first to win three games on the bounce this season before Sundowns won six on the bounce, the only club to do so thus far, which saw them climb to the summit.
“We want to be in the mix, that’s all I can say,” said Bhasera.
“We want to be in the mix and of course we want to push. Having said that, we are not surprised to be where we are. We can do even better than this. We are always prepared for the worst, but of course we want to be there regardless of who is there at the top.
“We are also very lucky to be working with Gavin Hunt because he has been around. The experience the coach has, I’m sure the young lads want to learn from him.”
Although Bhasera has won other trophies in the PSL – three MTN8 titles, two Telkom Knockout titles and one Nedbank Cup trophy, the 36-year-old has never lifted the league trophy.
Meanwhile, SuperSport CEO Stan Matthews hinted that this might be Bhasera’s last season with the club and there is a big possibility that he may retire at the end of the season.
This is Bhasera’s seventh season with SuperSport after he joined them from Bidvest Wits in the 2016/17 season.
As the longest serving member now, he was given the club’s captaincy at the beginning of this term following the departure of Ronwen Williams to Sundowns.
Matthews said, if Bash retires at the end of the season, he will foot his bill to pay for his qualifications and be deployed in the club’s structures just like the other former SuperSport players who have been loyal to the club.
Bhasera, who recently graduated to the 2022 PSL Player Transition Programme at the Gordon Institute of Business Science, was touched by Matthews’s gesture to pay for his fees if goes for coaching qualifications.
“Thank you to the CEO,” said Bhasera who was not aware of Matthews’s intentions, if he decides to hang up his boots.
“It means a lot. At SuperSport it is always family oriented. We support each other. It is not really surprising because they say if you take care of yourself, if you do well for the club, the club will be there for you.”
