Broos Makes Claim On ‘Fat Arse’ PSL Players

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos is pleased to see changes in the Premier Soccer League in terms of the standard of the game and how well players are looking after themselves.

Broos has never been one to mince his words since arriving in South Africa almost four years ago, especially about the quality of the league. The Belgian has qualified the national team for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) where they finished third and also the upcoming 2025 edition later this year in Morocco.

The coach says not a lot of people understood where he was coming from with his frankness as he believes the transformation in the game makes it easier for choices when key players get injuries.

“I see already now a change in PSL,” Broos told reporters at a round table discussion.

“I see already now a change when I go to a game, okay there are still games that I said ‘oh well [this is not good]’ but in the beginning when I was here there were games I didn’t believe my eyes. The level of the game and the players, I called them the ‘fat arse players’.

“Okay, sometimes you see them, but you see them less, more and more. How can you play a high level when you have an arse like that? Yeah, but it’s true. It is true.

“You need to be an athlete. And you don’t be an athlete if you don’t live like a professional, if you don’t train good, if you don’t go to the gym you are finished.”
