Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has once again raised the issue of the domestic calendar not providing his side with the best support to compete in the CAF Champion League.
Cardoso’s comments come on the back of his side’s 2-0 win over relegation threatened ORBIT College in the league at the Olympia Park on Tuesday night.
The result saw the defending champions go top of the Betway Premiership standings with 47 points in 20 matches while the newcomers remained in 15th place with 18 points from 21 outings.
Sundowns have a Champions League quarter-final first leg clash against Stade Mallien on Friday in Pretoria as the only South African side left in the competition.
Cardoso feels the league matches are too close to the continental competition games and that South Africa needs to really think about clubs representing the country in international tournaments.
“I think today is a little bit of a dark day for football in South Africa,” said Cardoso on SuperSport TV.
“And we are not pleased about the situation that we were put in. It’s clear.
“I think no one should be in South Africa able to play a Champions League match and have to play a Championship match three days before. I think it’s something that South Africa needs to think about.
“Everybody should be provided conditions to be successful in representing the country in the international level and we were not rewarded with that.”
“But we keep strong. We are going to fight.”
