Cardoso Discusses Rise Of Downs’ Red Cards

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has insisted his side are not an undisciplined team despite picking up four red cards in their last six games.

Masandawana were reduced to 10 men in injury-time of their 2-1 win over Magesi FC on Wednesday, with Magesi’s Samuel Darpoh also sent off.

It was Downs’ fourth red card in six games after both Bathusi Aubaas and Khuliso Mudau were sent off in their CAF Champions League match at Raja Club Athletic, while Ronwen Williams had been shown a red card against AmaZulu on Christmas Eve.

However, Cardoso insisted his side are not undisciplined and stay within the laws of the game, with the recent accumulation of red cards just a conincidence.

“I saw the situation of Divine but not exactly,” he said after the Magesi clash.

“What I understood, Aubaas had the ball in his hand and gives it to Divine and Divine gets a yellow card, I didn’t understand it’s so far away on the other side.

“We are not an undisciplined team. We got a red in Raja away, on Aubaas in an unfortunate action that happens to players and is a clear red card – he stepped on an opponent without any intention, and then yes Mudau had a bad action and he got a red card.

“We are a disciplined team, and most of all we have a lockerroom of wonderful people. There are very good men inside our lockerroom.

“I know them and I know how they play, sometimes I even tell them not to be naive because sometimes, for example today if we think about the goal of Magesi, we can take the ball out and finish the action.

“But sometimes, we want just to play and keep the intentionality but football is a competition, it’s a fight inside the pitch but we don’t fight outside of the rules and I never incentivise whatever it is rather than good defending.

“And we are a group of good men, very good men, with the intention of playing good football and to make the things in the right way.”
