Cardoso – Why I Brought Young Boy To Sundowns Presser

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has explained why he attended the press conference after the win against Cape Town City with a young boy on his lap.

Masandawana beat City 2-0 on Saturday without even having to move out of second gear, and Cardoso surprised after the final whistle when he took young Phiwe Mahlangu with him to meet the media.

After Sundowns lost to Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup semi-final at Loftus Versfeld Stadium by 2-1, there was a video of a young boy who went viral, crying because of Sundowns’ loss.

Cardoso explained that the video touched him, and he invited the young man to join the team in the locker room so that he could have a first-hand experience of his favourite players and the club. Mahlangu was smiling throughout the presser in the presence of his mother and the media.

“Before speaking on the match, I would just like to make you understand why Phiwe is here sitting with me. Phiwe is a Sundowns supporter, a strong one, and Phiwe was a boy that suffered a lot when we lost the Nedbank Cup to Kaizer Chiefs,” Cardoso told the media.

“I think if you are aware, there was a video that became viral of him crying so much. But the guy is a very, very, very strong man, because on the other day, in the morning, he made another video saying, I don’t cry anymore, now I smile because I believe in you.

“And as soon as I saw that video, I wanted to meet him. I wanted him to meet the team, and I invited him to join us. And today I dedicate the victory in this match to Phiwe, that is a gift from God, as I was explained, and today, this victory was also for us, a gift from God, an important one.

“So, he’s sharing our values. He’s sharing our love, and that’s how we treat our fans, with a lot of love and a lot of respect.

“These are the values that we have in the club, the values that I share, the values that we have in the locker room, and the values we want to transmit to the family, so that everyone understands that this is also the values of the club and how we leave the sport.”

While the win saw Sundowns move to 61 points from 24 matches – 12 above Orlando Pirates who have two games in hand, the club’s official social media accounts shared a video of Phiwe’s day behind the scenes.
