Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has explained why he didn’t use striker Peter Shalulile in the defending champions’ 3-0 win over Magesi on Sunday saying it’s a player management issue.
Shalulile was presented with a framed jersey for setting a new goal record in the league (130) before the game, and an unused sub as Sundowns went top of the Betway Premiership log with 14 points.

Cardoso explained after the game that he considered Shalulile’s long week on the road with his national team Namibia and the intensity of the games to have him rested, something the coach also did for other players who were on international duty.
“It’s similar thoughts regarding Peter, Peter came from a long trip,” said Cardoso.
“He played he just travelled back to Johannesburg, flying from the place where he played, to the capital of his country, then to Johannesburg. He arrived late in the night. He showed tiredness, and obviously not lining him up allowed him to have him fresh for the future.
“And people sometimes need to understand that it’s not because people want whoever player it is to play that I’m going to line up because I have to manage the group. I have to manage the motivation of the players. And most of all, I have always to manage the condition of the players in order to try to find the best team to perform.
“Not just thinking about one game but thinking about what is ahead because we have a very hectic schedule ahead of us that we will only succeed if we trust the group that we have, and we do.”
