Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine has named Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune as one of his long-term favourite keepers.
Chaine’s goalkeeping career can be traced as far back at during his days at Bloemfontein Celtic development, to Royal AM and then Chippa United.
The 27-year-old spoke to iDiski Times senior writer Velile Mnyandu in the current edition of the newspaper where he spoke about his favourites, including the Pirates duo of the late Senzo Meyiwa and the legendary Moeneeb Josephs.
Chaine emphasised how the Chiefs keeper has been a big influence, saying even though he aspired to be like Khune, he couldn’t even imagine what it took to play at the level the former Bafana-Bafana number one was at in his prime.
“I always say this about my favourite goalkeeper, it’s something that I’ve heard since I was young, even in my football,” Chaine told iDiski Times.
“That was prime Itu [Khune], that was prime Senzo [Meyiwa], so when I looked at both of them, I just had this thing inside me where even Moeneeb Josephs at that time, how do these people do it.
“When I watched them, like u-Itu, it’s something that you can’t describe as a young boy, looking at them and doing it at that high level. And you even aspire to be there but don’t think about what it would take and how you would react when you are there.”
