Chiefs Coach Gives Update On Petersen

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef has given an update on Brandon Petersen, saying the goalkeeper should be back in action soon.

Petersen started the current campaign on fire with Chiefs and has kept 11 clean sheets in his 16 league appearances this term.

However, he got injured just before the league Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates in February and missed out on the side’s last five matches.

In his absence the side has lost some crucial games, including the derby but recovered to record three successive victories that saw them move to third place on the league log with 39 points.

Speaking after Chiefs’ 3-1 win over Orbit College at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Youssef said the captain should back soon.

“Petersen, he was with the physio,” said Youssef.

“And we have to say thank you to the medical staff for preparing him. And last weeks he was with the coaches, he’s working and I think soon he’ll be back with the team.”

The coach also added that Amakhosi have been unlucky with injuries this season putting that on the schedule that included the CAF Confederation Cup campaign and suspensions.

“I’m 100% with you but let me say 80% of our injuries it was with contact in the game,” added Youssef.

“We were more unlucky so every game we’d lose one or two players but like I said 80% of our injuries is about contact. Also competing in different competitions.

“You know the last few years we weren’t in Africa so when you compete in Africa and with the different competitions we have in South Africa there is some load for the players.

“But like I said with injuries 80% of them were coming from contact in the game not the training session or other work load. It’s about contact it’s bad luck.

“If you see the last few games some people discuss about inconsistency in the squad but like today the two substitutions that we did it’s [Inacio] Miguel because it’s about a yellow card and [Dillon] Solomon about injury.

“So every week we are forced to make a substitution coming from yellow card or injury. I have to say thank you for the board that we have a big squad.

“So every time when a player is injured there’s another player that comes to make the same job. We have a big squad and everyone is ready to fight, to continue to play or to keep his position.”
