Chiefs Get Second League Win Under Johnson

Kaizer Chiefs recorded their second successive win under Cavin Johnson as they defeated Polokwane City 1-0 in the DStv Premiership at the Peter Mokaba stadium on Saturday afternoon.

A second half Pule Mmodi goal, his fourth of the season, was enough to move Chiefs to fifth place on the log with 20 points while Rise and Shine are 10th with 17 points.

It was the home side that showed the intention to score early with Douglas Mapfumo and Oswin Appollis’ shots going over the bar in the opening 10 minutes. Mmodi could have opened the scoring in the 12th minute one-on-one with the goalkeeper but lost to the keeper.

Mapfumo was again troublesome for the Amakhosi defence in the 15th minute and saw his shot tipped over by Bruce Bvuma resulting in a corner kick for the home side. Thabang Matuludi was denied by the woodwork from the set-piece, what looked like would have been a beautiful bicycle kick.

Two minutes before the half hour mark Christian Saile had a chance to break the deadlock but it was saved by Manuel Sapunga. Three minutes to halftime Puleng Marema had an opportunity to score however it was an easy save by Bvuma.

There were no changes from either side in the second half. Ranga Chivaviro tried his luck early in the second stanza but that ball went way over the bar.

Six minutes into the half, it was Chiefs who would go in front as Mmodi slotted home the opener from range to break the deadlock.

Five minutes after that Saile coming from the right had his powerful shot saved by Sapunga. Chiefs could have scored a second when Mmodi found Saile in the box but the ball went wide before the Congolese forward was subbed. Appollis had a chance to level in the 76th minute but Bvuma was alert to deny him.

While there was late pressure from the home side, Chiefs held on for the win on the road.
