Chiefs Legend Passes Away

Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed the sad passing of the club’s former defensive stalwart, John ‘Buick’ Makwazi, at the age of 77.

Makwazi, who had a career that spanned 24 years, joined Amakhosi in 1975 from Moroka Swallows Big XV.

In his debut season, Makwazi aided the club to the Castle Champion of Champions and the Chevrolet Champion of Champions. The following year, he clinched the Benson and Hedges Cup and BP Top 32 in 1976, before rounding that up with league titles in 1977 and 1979.

The club released a statement on Friday, which read: “Today Kaizer Chiefs mourn the loss of a legendary figure following the passing of former defensive stalwart, John ‘Buick’ Makwazi, at the age of 77.

“Makwati is survived by his five children, eleven grandchildren and his only sister.

“And the Amakhosi Faithful will never forget John ‘Buick’ Makwati, a legend and hero forever. Robala ka kagiso Mokgatla, Kgabo!.”

We, at iDiski Times, would like to express our condolences to Makwazi’s friends and family, as well as the Amakhosi football fraternity.
