Mfundo Vilakazi scored the winner as Kaizer Chiefs lifted the 2026 Toyota Cup after defeating Scottland FC 1-0 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday.
The pre-season tournament hosted by Amakhosi against an international opponent was won by visiting teams in the past two years, Young Africans in 2024 and Asante Kotoko in 2025.
Chiefs new coach Fernando Da Cruz named a youthful starting line-up but also gave new signing Adolf Mtasingwa a start despite not having been with the club in their recent tour of Europe.
Meanwhile Norman Mapeza’s starting 11 excluded former Chiefs attackers Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona and also the latter’s younger brother Walter who played in South Africa for Polokwane City.
The home side started making trouble for their visitors inside the opening 10 minutes after Bradley Cross played the ball to Thabiso Monyane who looked dangerous but was stopped in his tracks just outside the box. Chiefs were awarded a set-piece but nothing came from it.
Scottland had some half chances but couldn’t really penetrate the Chiefs defense. Chiefs’ break came in the 17th minute, Incaio Miguel’s long cross meant for Ethan Chislett landed on the defender who didn’t clear well leaving the ball to fall on Obrigado’s feet. The 21-year-old made no mistake and buried the chance and broke the deadlock.
There were two other big opportunities for Chiefs in the half to double their lead. In the 24th minute Asanele Velebayi and Chislett lost possession in the box and in the 32nd minute after Lebohang Maboe set-up Vilakazi whose last effort was blocked by the goalkeeper.
Chiefs went into the break with the lead and brought on Wandile Duba and Etiosa Ighodaro for Velebayi and Da Silva at the start of the second half, while Scottland made a host of changes, with Billiat and the Musona brothers among those coming on.
It took six minutes for Da Cruz’s charges to turn on the pressure on their opponents, Monyane finding Chislett in the box however the ball deflected for a corner. There was another golden chance for Chiefs just after 70 minutes, Reeve Frosler squared the ball to Ighodaro in the box however the Nigeria national missed the target with his head. Duba was also guilty of not converting a chance in the 80th minute.
