Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou has made a bold declaration regarding the Betway Premiership title, stating that the team’s ambition is to walk away with the championship this season.
Amakhosi have enjoyed an impressive run in the league so far and, for the first time in many years, appear to be genuine title contenders.
They currently occupy second place on the standings with 30 points collected from 15 matches, highlighting a bit of consistency that has been missing in recent campaigns.
Chiefs last lifted the league title in the 2014/15 season under the guidance of head coach Stuart Baxter.
Since then, the domestic scene has been largely dominated by Mamelodi Sundowns, who have claimed the title on eight occasions, with the now-defunct Bidvest Wits breaking their dominance once during that period, winning the the 2016/17 title.
Matlou says the focus is now on maintaining that consistency. The midfielder insists that Chiefs are determined to push until the end of the season and reclaim the league crown for the Phefeni Glamour Boys.
“For now, we’re looking at Sunday’s game, then after we are going to focus on league games because the preparations are for Sunday,” said Matlou on UKhozi FM.
“Of course, talking about the league standings. We’re on the positive side, we’re on the second position and we want to win the league.”
Matlou credited the coaching staff’s dedication, noting that their guidance and encouragement are vital in motivating the squad to maintain their winning form.
“Our coaches are telling us to work hard, we’re going to win games, we mustn’t give up,” he added.
“We are adjusting into the plan, focusing on the tactics that the coaches are telling us. And so far, things are going well for us and we just stay positive. We work hard to win games.”
