Durban City goalkeeper Fredrick Asare has opened up about his stellar performance against Orlando Pirates last weekend.

Asare missed the majority of the campaign due to a long-term injury sustained shortly after joining the KwaZulu-Natal outfit at the start of the season.

However, he truly announced himself to South African football with a masterclass display against Pirates, thwarting their hopes of clinching the league title in front of their home fans at the Orlando Amstel Stadium.

The clash marked his third consecutive start, following recent appearances against Siwelele and Stellenbosch.

Reflecting on his performance against the Sea Robbers, Asare expressed pride in his comeback but emphasized his desire to keep improving.

“We all know Orlando Pirates, it’s one of the biggest clubs in South Africa,” said Asare.

“Going into the game, we had a plan. It was a collective work, the defenders did their work, technical team did their part.

“And for me, first time playing with them, it was a motivation for me because I remember the first round, I was on the stands at the Moses Mabhida Stadium with over 40 000 fans all around.

“Going into this game, they spoke to me, they calmed me down, telling me that this is a big game, and you know that Pirates is a big team, I just have to calm my nerves down and do whatever I have to do.

“And God being so good, it was a wonderful day for me. Whatever I prepared during the off-season, injury and training, it showed that day.

“I’m really proud of myself with this kind of performance and of the team as well. I think going forward, it’s going to be better.”
