Former Kaizer Chiefs player Josta Dladla has insisted that Amakhosi are in the title race and can challenge Mamelodi Sundowns this season.
The Glamour Boys picked up an important three points against bitter rivals Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby.
The three points saw Chiefs move to 35 on the log and close their gap on Sundowns, who lost to Maritzburg United on Sunday and remained on 51.
Stuart Baxter and his men, though, still sit 16 points behind Masandawana, but have four games in hand and are still playing Downs in the second half of the campaign.
Dladla believes Amakhosi could have a real chance at upsetting Downs and push them off their perch after they’ve won the last four league titles in a row.
“I’m happy, it opens up the league,” he said on Off The Pitch.
“There is still a chance. Chiefs got like four games in hand. It’s points that they don’t have, I understand that, Sundowns already got the points.
“But now they started with Pirates, three points. Three [games] to go. Three games and they still have to play Sundowns.
“It’s football.”
Chiefs are still awaiting on the outcome of the arbitration process over their two December fixtures against Cape Town City and Golden Arrows.
Should these not be regarded as walkover, Amakhosi indeed have four games in hand and could close the gap on Sundowns to just four – that’s before the two teams will meet again.
