Kaizer Chiefs playmaker Keagan Dolly has expressed the pain of crashing out in the last weekend’s Carling Knockout Cup and insisted they need to return to winning and show everyone what they are made of.
Chiefs lost to AmaZulu, who snatched a win in the 87th minute at FNB Stadium to extend their trophy drought.
It was a historical day for Usuthu, as they recorded their first win over Chiefs in the knockout competition in the PSL era at the Calabash.
This loss led to the sacking of coach Molefi Ntseki, who won only four of the 13 matches he was in charge, on Monday, with Cavin Johnson appointed as the caretaker coach Ntseki .
However, Dolly, who recently returned from a knee injury, said their focus is on a tough test against in-form Golden Arrows at Mpumalanga Stadium on Saturday (15:30).
“Obviously we are disappointed from our last game and not qualifying for the next round of the Carling Cup, but I think this is an important weekend for us. We have to come back and not dwell on the past,” Dolly, who voted as the Man of the Match in the CKO clash, told Chiefs media team.
“If we can win this weekend we can change our mindset and start winning. It has been a tough week for the club.
“For us as players, we have to do our job, which is to win, to get results for the club, and for ourselves to build confidence for the rest of the season.
“I feel there is still a long way to go, and that’s why I think this weekend is very important because a win can give us momentum for the remainder of the season.”
Arrows have started the season better than Chiefs, occupying second spot on the DStv Premiership standings, six points ahead of eighth-placed Amakhosi.
Dolly says a win on the weekend will be crucial to flourish for the rest of the campaign.
“They are confident at the moment. I’m sure they will be thinking we are down and out going into this game but I feel it is for us to show them that we are Kaizer Chiefs and prove to them what we are made of,” he said.
“We will go there with the mindset of getting nothing less than the three points, and I believe we have the capability to do that.
“However, we will not underestimate them, we know we will have to work hard, but we are prepared to do what it takes.”
Dolly also empathises with the frustrations of the Amakhosi supporters, who have painfully seen their rivals go to the podium to claim trophies.
“The only way we can assure them is by winning. Every one of us is desperate to win something for our supporters, and we must go out and show that in the results on the pitch,” Dolly insisted.
