Downs-Stellies Fixture Set To Be Postponed

The Betway Premiership clash between Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch FC that was set to be played on 5 April – between both side’s CAF interclub quarter-finals – is set to be postponed by the Premier Soccer League.

Both Sundowns and Stellenbosch have a busy schedule as they participate in the CAF inter-club competitions and advanced to the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup quarter-finals.

The schedule got tighter for Sundowns as they will face Sekhukhune United in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final on 28 March, four days before they will welcome Tunisian giants Esperance Sportive de Tunis for the CAFCL quarter-final first leg. Meanwhile, Stellenbosch will host Zamalek SC in the CAFCC quarter-final first-leg.

Sundowns and Stellenbosch were set to face each other three days after their CAFCL/CC quarter-final first legs, just a few days before their second-leg clashes.

But this publication has established that the Premier Soccer League and both sides agreed to postpone the game to allow them to prepare for the second leg of CAF competitions as they both will be playing away from home on 8 April.

It remains to be seen whether Orlando Pirates’ clash with Polokwane City, scheduled for Sunday, 6 April will also be postponed, with Pirates facing MC Alger away from home on 1 April and the second leg scheduled for 9 April.
