SuperSport United striker Bradley Grobler says the sacking of former coach Gavin Hunt was as much a shock to him and his teammates as it was to most South Africans.
Hunt parted ways with the club in March this year after two-and-a-half years of his return to the club where he won the league title three times. The former Kaizer Chiefs coach led the side to a seventh-place finish last season but left them in the relegation zone, second from bottom on the Betway Premiership log with the side having won just five matches at that point. Ultimately, they finished in 14th place.
Speaking to iDiski Times writer Lethabo Kganyago in edition 208 of the newspaper, Grobler admitted they were shocked however they had the job of saving the club to do.
“Yeah, I think it did come as a shock,” Grobler told iDiski Times.
“I think a lot of us didn’t expect it, but it’s not up to us, and as professionals, you need to kind of get on with it. I mean, I’ve been through this probably 20 times in my career where you’re changing coaches. And it’s part of the job.
“As much as some players might have been disappointed or whatever, I think the team got on with it. Everyone knows they’ve got a job to do, and again, I keep going back to the performances and results just not lining up. We’ve been very good, I think, and it’s just been one of those seasons where we just had to go and get it over with and secure our spot in the league next year.
“And I believe next year can be a very good year for this team.”
