Hlungwani Delivers Verdict Of Chiefs Penalty Appeal

Former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani has applauded match official Siyabulela Qunta’s bravery in denying Kaizer Chiefs a penalty in their shock defeat to Siwelele.

The Glamour Boys went down 2-0 to the Bloemfontein-based outfit to go two matches without a win after being held to a 1-1 draw by Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby a few days prior.

While a certain section of the Amakhosi faithful felt that a spot kick should have gone their way after Neo Rapoo appeared to have tackled Glody Lilepo in the penalty area, Hlungwani dismissed the suggestion.

‘The Principal’ said Qunta was spot on with his decision not to award a penalty kick as the Congolese attacker attempted to deceive the referee by diving.

“We see Lilepo in control of the ball and as he gets to the ball, Neo makes a challenge,” he said on Soccerzone.

“He [Rapoo] doesn’t get anything, but Lilepo decided to swim there trying to deceive the referee.

“If you have a look there, he [Lilepo] gets the ball. After getting the ball, and then a challenge comes in.

“The challenge got nothing to trip him, but he tried to fall deceiving the referee. The referee said, ‘There’s no penalty’!

“This is simulation trying to deceive the referee. Correct decision by the referee not to award a penalty.”
